Hi everyone,
We hope you’ve had another fun-filled week at home. Thank you all so much for sharing your work with us! All the determination, creativity and happiness that we have seen from you really does put us in a marvellous mood! We still miss you all every single day and we always look forward to seeing what you’ve been doing on the Archibald Facebook and Twitter pages. All of the staff think that Year 3 are doing quite brilliantly!
Here are some more activities for you to try this week. You can have a go at as many or few as you want. If you do have a go then we would love to know how you have got on! Please share a photo on Facebook or Twitter of what you have achieved as this will keep us all smiling!
We’re also open to new suggestions and ideas so please let us know if you have any great activities that you think we should share with everyone online.
PSHE
We’d like to start our Year 3 blog this week with a story which is available online now, called ‘Everybody Worries’ by Jon Burgerman. Mrs Nisbet’s family were having a story around the campfire and toasting marshmallows. We all loved this one and wanted to share it with you. Please remember everyone, ‘You can overcome anything when we’re there for each other’.
PS: Don’t worry, Thea did get closer to see the pictures afterwards!
Why don’t you download it yourself? https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/books/jon-burgerman-everybody-worries-free-ebook/
NUMERACY
Times Tables
Please keep logging onto TT Rock Stars as we’ve added the 8 times table to see how well you will get on! Here are some more times tables games to try if you fancy something a bit different.

Multiplying and Dividing
We’re now going to use your excellent multiplication and division skills to have a go at using different methods to find out our answers.
Watch the videos on the white rose website and have a go at these activities.

Can you explain these pictorial images to your parents?
Can you count forward in 8s at any starting point?
Then, can you count backward in 8s at any starting point?
Have a go at these word problems:
Disco Time Problem Solving!
On the dance floor there are 24 legs. The disco is full of dogs (each with 4 legs) and storks (each with 2 legs).
How many dogs and storks are there? You must have at least one of each creature. There are a few possible combinations. How many can you find?
You might also want to try the BBC website for more tasks linked to multiplying and dividing by eight!

LITERACY
What did you think of the first 3 chapters? I thought it was a great idea to make a den in the attic… but I’m wondering what will happen next?
See if you can follow my activity idea on the video…This week I’m reading chapter 4.
Outdoor Literacy Challenge:
As we are due another week of warm weather and sunshine, we thought you might like an outdoor literacy challenge! Go for a walk with someone in your family and pay close attention to everything that is around you. Sometimes, it’s easy to miss what is going on so chat with a grown up about all the things you notice.
What can you see?
What can you hear?
What are the most suitable adjectives to describe this?
Can you think of adverbs to provide more detail?
You might look or listen out for animals, minibeasts, homes, people, flowers or anything you want!
When you get home your job is to write about everything that you have spotted. You could do your trip as a recount, a mind map or even a cartoon strip! The important bit is that when someone reads your work they feel as if they were actually with you during your walk because your description is so detailed and impressive!
If you prefer writing fiction then why not write a story that begins with a detailed description of your walk but then includes an imaginative twist!
TOPIC
This is the Greek Alphabet which was often found on Greek Pots. Could you try and write your own message for someone to decode or try and write your name?
https://www.historyforkids.net/greek-alphabets.html
Using the Greek Alphabet, write the following names of Greek gods in Greek letters – remember to use capital letters at the beginning.
Demeter ……………………………. Hermes …………………………………. Ares ………………………………… Aphrodite ……………………………… Hera ………………………………… Zeus ……………………………….…… Apollo ………………………..……… Artemis ………………………………… Athene ……………………………….. Dionysos ……………………….………. Hades ……………………………..…. Poseidon ……………………………….. Artemis ……………………………
Challenge:
Using your knowledge and inference skills from looking at these pictures, see if you can answer this question.
Why was Athens able to move from second-rate polis to the most powerful city in Greece?
If you could add another picture here, what else would you add and why to explain your answer?
SCIENCE
As the sunny weather looks to continue (fingers crossed!) we have a rather fun shadow investigation! Go outside in the morning and get someone in your family to stand in the sunlight. Look at the shadow, which way is it facing? How long is it? Use a ruler to find out! Now get the same person to stand in the same spot every hour for the rest of the day. What happens to the shadow? Does it stay the same? Does it change, if so how? Measure the length of the shadow each time. You could even take a photo every hour to compare the results! You are all super scientists so we would love to know what you find out!
Ice Cube Challenge:
Here is a fun challenge. Once you have tried the pan and plastic container, you could even try other materials too!
ART
Here is a lovely way to make the most of the sunshine. Choose some toy animals or anything else you want for that matter and have a go creating shadow art!
We all know how important it is to wash out hands right now so why not draw some hand washing friends? You could even put them in your window to remind everyone who walks by!
PE CHALLENGE
Have you ever heard of a bleep test? Well here is a very talented person to tell you more!
We hope you all have a wonderful week at home that is full of smiles, happiness and laughter. Stay safe and have fun! We miss you all lots! From The Year 3 Team x
