Newcastle Young Carers Workshop

20/9/17

Today all children in Years 1 to 4 were lucky enough to have two lovely ladies from Newcastle Young Carers come in to speak to us about supporting young carers and their families. This is an organisation managed by Barnardo’s. We learned that a young carer can be any child or young person up to the age of 17 who takes responsibility for looking after someone else.

First we looked at different jobs that are often done in our houses. The children looked at different jobs that need to be carried out daily and decided whether they thought the job was usually done by a grown up or a child. We decided most of the jobs were usually done by grown ups.

The ladies then spoke to us about how some grown ups can be poorly, meaning they cannot always do all the jobs around the house. Sometimes some children have to take on extra responsibilities. We thought about how this might make them feel and what they might miss out on.

Newcastle young Carers try to prevent children becoming young carers by bringing in other adults to support families. They also support physically, and emotionally, children who do have to take on extra roles around the house. It was a fantastic workshop that gave us lots of food for thought.

Archibald Staff are looking forward to training after school to find out more.
