PE at Archibald!

16/12/24

At Archibald, we thrive on providing pupils the opportunity to participate in physical activity which enables them to achieve the current government guidelines:

Children and young people aged 5 to 18 should:

  • aim for an average of at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity a day across the week
  • take part in a variety of types and intensities of physical activity across the week to develop movement skills, muscles and bones
  • reduce the time spent sitting or lying down and break up long periods of not moving with some activity. Aim to spread activity throughout the day.

In order to achieve the guidelines stated above, children at Archibald participate in:

  • 2 hours of weekly PE sessions
  • A variety of breakfast clubs, afterschool clubs or lunchtime clubs
  • Participating in regular brain breaks during the school day
  • Daily Mile
  • Active travel to school
  • Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL)
  • Inter and Intra-School competitions.

Curriculum!

In our curriculum, all children are required to participate in 2 hours of PE each week. During this term, all year groups will have participated in developing their fundamental movement skills and ball skills –  this would include a number of games that would keep children engaged and moving throughout. During Autumn 2, children in Key stage 1 started to develop their gymnastics and build their fitness.

“I like the different skills we have learnt like rolling and jumping!”

“I like how you are always active!”

Children in Key stage 2 built on their knowledge of gymnastics and also started their own dance patterns.

Extracurricular clubs!

We are lucky enough to have a wide variety of Extracurricular clubs here at Archibald. Here is a list of all the clubs that happen at Archibald First School:

  • Rugby Minis – Key Stage 1 and 2
  • Lee Sterry Archery
  • Lee Sterry Football  –  Key Stage 1 and 2
  • Chess Club
  • Gymnastics – Year 3
  • Invasion Games – Year 2
  • Lil Beatz – Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

“I wish the sessions were longer!”

“Archery is the best because we get loads of turns!”

“Very Fun!”

Opportunities for all!

This Autumn has been full of wonderful opportunities for all pupils. Year 3 had the wonderful expert Squash coach Ricard Vitty in to teach them all about Squash. Year 2 participated in a Basketball tournament. Year 4 and Year 2 have received some excellent CPD from Coaches from the Newcastle PE and Sport Service and finally, all of the school received a wonderful session of Glow in the dark Dodgeball hosted by Sports Scool.

“When you win, you get awards!”

“The coach makes fun games!”

Looking ahead to the New Year…

During the academic year, Archibald will continue to participate in a number of competitions such as football, taekwondo and cricket. Clubs will continue to run and provide as many opportunities as possible for children.
