Hi everyone, welcome back. We hope you had some time to relax over the Easter break and that you are ready for lots of new challenges!
We have loved seeing what you have been up to. Isn’t it great that the sun has been shining and you have been able to get out in your gardens for some fresh air? The grown ups have been doing exactly that, too. Miss White has even managed to read an entire novel!
This half term, our topic is Castles and Knights. It’s one of our absolute favourites and we are so excited to share it with you! We also have a new grown up joining us for this topic – Mr Bourke! He is so excited to meet you all properly, but in the meantime, he has some other ideas in mind – but I won’t spoil it! I do know that Mr Bourke would love to see your work. Make sure to use your best handwriting and really show him just how fabulous you are, Year 1! You can share anything you do on the Facebook group, or send it to our homework email.
Mr Bourke has also been telling me all about some super stories we can share with you over the coming weeks. They’re all about knights! The first knight we would like to introduce you to is St George. Take a look at the blocks below to discover this week’s tasks.

Challenge 1
Create a WANTED poster for a knight:
Draw a picture of what the knight should look like. Record five adjectives to describe the sort of knight needed to slay a dragon.
Challenge 2
Write a character description about George:
Think about what he did and how brave he was! Try to remember your capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Can you include any of your joins?
Challenge 3
Retell the story of St George and the dragon using your brilliant adjectives:
You might like to write this as a story, create a comic strip with illustrations or act it out and create a movie!

Marvellous Maths!
The White Rose Maths Team has prepared a series of five maths lessons for each year group. We will be adding five more each week for the next few weeks. Every lesson comes with a short video showing you clearly and simply how to help your child to complete the activity successfully.

As I said, this half term’s topic would have been all about castles. Luckily, just because we are at home, it doesn’t mean we can’t still share one of our favourite ever topics with you! To kick start our topic we would like to share some really important vocabulary with you.

Super Science!
As you know, our Amazing Animals topic was cut short – but you are all just so clever that you managed to learn lots of the scientific vocabulary already. Also, lots of you created amazing Guess Who games to help us learn about animal classification. This week, I would like you to look at the groups of animals below and spot the Odd One Out! Try to use words such as mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish and bird. Can you explain to somebody in your house why you think a certain animal is the odd one out? You do not need to record anything for this task, but if you would like to, you can share your learning on the Facebook page, or on our homework email. Enjoy! Think about, draw or print pictures of your three favourite animals. Label their bodies. What is similar about your three animals? What is different? Do they belong to the same classification? How do you know? What do they eat? Are they herbivores, carnivores or omnivores?

Challenge 1
Design your very own bucket:
You might like to draw one and colour it in, or you might have one that you have used in the garden or at the beach. If that’s the case, you could add stickers to decorate, or label it with your name. Perhaps everybody in the family could design a bucket, or it can stay invisible; the choice is yours. Then, find some items that you can use to fill the buckets up over time – I like to use marbles in Class 3, but anything will work! If you have drawn your bucket, you could use some flat items and blu-tac them on when necessary.
Challenge 2
Fill someone’s bucket!
Think of all the ways that you could fill someone else’s bucket. You could say kind things, tidy up without being asked, help to dry the dishes, read independently, or play with your sibling whilst your grown up does an important job – anything that will make someone else smile! Whatever you do, try not to be a bucket dipper – you wouldn’t want to empty a bucket and have to start again! Remember, if you are filling their bucket, then you are filling your own, too! I hope to see lots of photographs of full buckets by next week!

I thought it would be a good idea to share some signs that would help with our topic. I often find it easier to watch someone else first – you can use YouTube with your grownups if you find it easier to learn this way, too. We hope you enjoy completing these tasks. If you have any castle or knight themed items in your house (books, Lego, costumes, etc.) you could get them out and get yourself excited for everything else we will be learning! Why not have a battle in the garden?! It would also be fantastic if you could read something each day.
We really do wish we could be doing these tasks with you in our classrooms instead, but it’s important that you all stay safe at home for a little longer. You can do it, Year 1; keep smiling!
