Today Year 1 went on a VERY long journey on the coach to Shildon Railway Museum.
When we got there we put away our coats and lunchboxes and split into two groups.
One group went off first to cut out and make our own Locomotion 1 steam engine. This activity kept the children very quiet and they got to colour their engines in very brightly.
The other group went off to find out all about George Stephenson. We learned lots of facts including where he lived. Did you know he shared his house with lots and lots of other families so it was very squishy!
We found out about lots of his inventions too, including the Stephenson miners lamp and the first ever railways. This is why he is known as the Father of the Railway.
The children then got to dress up and act out the first ever steam engine journey. This went from Shildon, to Darlington then ended in Stockton. There were a few issues on the way but lots of people came out to celebrate the achievement.
We then swapped over so all children got to partake in all activities. We got to see lots of very old and unique trains and buses. The children were fantastically behaved and I think it was a great day had by all!
A huge thank you to the staff at Shildon Railway Museum, we learned so much and had a wonderful trip!
Thank you also to the parents that came with us, your help is hugely appreciated.
